Structural and functional features of central nervous system lymphatic vessels

One of the characteristics of the central nervous system is the lack of a classical lymphatic drainage system. Although it is now accepted that the central nervous system undergoes constant immune surveillance that takes place within the meningeal compartment, the mechanisms governing the entrance and exit of immune cells from the central nervous system remain poorly understood … The discovery of the central nervous system lymphatic system may call for a reassessment of basic assumptions in neuroimmunology and sheds new light on the aetiology of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases associated with immune system dysfunction … ABSTRACT

Relationship between somatic dysfunction of the lumbosacral joint and changes in the gait pattern

Relationship between somatic dysfunction of the lumbosacral joint and changes in the gait pattern

Somatic dysfunction of L5-S1 is believed to cause or worsen a rotation pattern in the pelvis, often combined with low back pain. This affects symmetry of motion amplitudes in lower joints, and could influence the gait pattern. This study was conducted to determine whether a somatic dysfunction of L5 has an influence on the gait pattern … ABSTRACT

Low back pain: A biomechanical rationale based on “patterns” of disc degeneration.

The objective of this study was to determine how different patterns of multi-level disc degeneration influence the biomechanical behavior of the lumbar spine. Due to the complex etiology of low back pain, it is often difficult to identify the specific factors that contribute to the symptoms of a particular patient … ABSTRACT

Age-Related Decline in Chest Wall Mobility: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Community-Dwelling Elderly Women

Chest wall mobility is strongly related to respiratory function; however, the effect of aging on chest wall mobility—and the level at which this mobility is most affected—remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate age-related differences in chest wall mobility and respiratory function among elderly women in different age groups … ABSTRACT

Imaging Technology and Somatic Dysfunction Theory

Somatic dysfunction theory and related palpatory findings have not changed meaningfully since the founding of the osteopathic medical profession. However, as imaging technology evolves, prevailing assertions concerning the validity of somatic dysfunction theory and palpatory findings will no doubt be under increased scrutiny, resulting in substantial changes. In the current article, imaging data derived from studies using various imaging modalities are being presented and discussed. How these data predict the changes to osteopathic physicians’ understanding of somatic dysfunction is explained … ABSTRACT

Physical inactivity is associated with narrower lumbar intervertebral discs, high-fat content of paraspinal muscles and low back pain and disability

Although physical inactivity has been associated with numerous chronic musculoskeletal complaints, few studies have examined its associations with spinal structures. Moreover, previously reported associations between physical activity and low back pain are conflicting. This study examined the associations between physical inactivity and intervertebral disc height, paraspinal fat content and low back pain and disability … MORE

Perceived teaching quality between near-peer and academic tutors in an osteopathic practical skills class

Near-peer teaching (NPT) has been reported in a number of teaching programs across different health professions. The utilisation of near-peer teaching in a teaching program has been demonstrated as beneficial for the student, the near-peer tutor and the teaching institution. The literature reports that students evaluate near-peer teaching as comparable to faculty teaching. The use of near-peers with academic tutors in the same classroom and utilising near-peer teaching for an extended period is unreported in osteopathy and limited in the broader literature. This study aimed to investigate the quality ratings of the academic tutors and near-peer tutors teaching in the same classroom, over a semester …  ABSTRACT
