Reliability of Diagnosis and Clinical Efficacy of Cranial Osteopathy: A Systematic Review

In 2010, the World Health Organization released benchmarks for training in osteopathy in which they considered cranial osteopathy as an important osteopathic skill. However, the evidence supporting the reliability of diagnosis and the efficacy of treatment in this field appears scientifically weak and inconsistent. The objectives of this systematic review were to identify and critically evaluate the scientific literature dealing with the reliability of diagnosis and the clinical efficacy of techniques and therapeutic strategies used in cranial osteopathy… MORE

Clinical effects of spinal manipulation in the management of children and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder — A systematic review

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are classified as pervasive developmental disorders that permanently affect essential mental functions. Symptoms include quality-related disorders in areas of social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, the variability of behaviours and specific learning disabilities. Abnormalities in development are already apparent in early childhood. The aim of this study was to identify evidence for the clinical benefits of manual therapy of the musculoskeletal system in children diagnosed with ASD … MORE

The mesentery: structure, function, and role in disease

The mesentery: structure, function, and role in disease

Systematic study of the mesentery is now possible because of clarification of its structure. Although this area of science is in an early phase, important advances have already been made and opportunities uncovered. For example, distinctive anatomical and functional features have been revealed that justify designation of the mesentery as an organ. Accordingly, the mesentery should be subjected to the same investigatory focus that is applied to other organs and systems. In this Review, the authors summarise the findings of scientific investigations of the mesentery so far and explore its role in human disease. They aim to provide a platform from which to direct future scientific investigation of the human mesentery in health and disease … ABSTRACT

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Somatic Dysfunction After Acute Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Somatic Dysfunction After Acute Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Somatic dysfunction caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be managed by osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). In this case report, the authors describe 2 patients with severe TBI who were each treated with OMT in a level-1 regional trauma center. Both patients received OMT beginning in the acute care phase of injury. Somatic dysfunction improved during the course of treatment, and no adverse effects of OMT were noted. More comprehensive research may clarify the efficacy and adverse effects of OMT as part of multimodal acute care of patients with severe TBI … ABSTRACT

Effects of osteopathic treatment on pulmonary function and chronic thoracic pain after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (OstinCaRe): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an effective and widespread coronary revascularisation technique, nevertheless there are a number of long-term postoperative complications from which patients can suffer. One year after CABG surgery pulmonary function is decreased by 12% and 30% of the patients suffer from chronic thoracic pain. To date and to our knowledge there are no effective treatments for these conditions. The aim of the present clinical trial is to explore the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment on these conditions … MORE

Does Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) have an Effect in the Treatment of Patients Suffering from Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)?

During the last 50 years, the efficacy of medication in the treatment of gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has increased with introduction of histamine 2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors. Surgical treatment is effective, but irreversible and complications may occur. Is it possible to develop an effective treatment procedure beside pharmaceuticals and surgery? The objective of this study was to describe Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT) techniques and investigate the effect in patients suffering from GERD … MORE

Does case misclassification threaten the validity of studies investigating the relationship between neck manipulation and vertebral artery dissection stroke? Yes

For patients and health care providers who are considering spinal manipulative therapy of the neck, it is crucial to establish if it is a trigger for cervical artery dissection and/or stroke, and if it is, the magnitude of the risk. The authors of this article discuss the biological plausibility of how neck manipulation could cause cervical artery dissection and also discuss how case misclassification threatens the validity of influential published studies that have investigated the relationship between neck manipulation and dissection … MORE

Osteopathic manipulation as a complementary approach to Parkinson’s disease: A controlled pilot study

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a therapy of manual forces that is directed to improve function and homeostasis. It has been shown to improve balance in individuals with dizziness, and improve gait in Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study was designed to determine if our pre-defined OMM protocol would improve motor function and balance in individuals with PD … ABSTRACT

Osteopathic manipulative treatment: A systematic review and critical appraisal of comparative effectiveness and health economics research

In recent years, evidence has emerged regarding the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT). Despite growing evidence in this field, there is need for appropriate research designs that effectively reflect the person-centred system of care promoted in osteopathy and provide data which can inform policy decisions within the healthcare system. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify, appraise and synthesise the evidence from comparative effectiveness and economic evaluation research involving OMT … ABSTRACT

Portugal – the new frontiers for COME

COME Collaboration has signed an important Memorandum of Understanding with Piaget Institute – an Higher Education/University in Portugal – which will allow COME to work in close partnership with one of the leading osteopathic education institutions in Portugal. It is a great honour for COME to announce this collaboration, which create put the basis for fellowships, internships and academic as well as clinical partnerships.
