The Safety of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

The safety and effectiveness of medical procedures and treatments are the concern of all health care professionals, payers, policy makers, and public consumers of these services. Even before the 2001 report from the Institute of Medicine, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) had promoted and fostered documentation of the quality, safety, and effectiveness of osteopathic medicine, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), … MORE

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Effect of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment on Sacral Base Asymmetry

Patients with low back pain (LBP) may receive osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to resolve or manage their pain. The indication for OMT for patients with LBP is the presence of somatic dysfunction, diagnosed using palpatory examination. Because palpatory findings commonly have poor interexaminer reliability, the current study used ultrasonography (US) to establish pre-OMT and post-OMT musculoskeletal measurements of relative asymmetry between pelvic and sacral bony landmarks. The objective of this study was to document objective musculoskeletal changes that occur in response to OMT using US and to compare palpatory assessment of landmark asymmetry with US assessment … ABSTRACT

Assessment of cervical stiffness in axial rotation among chronic neck pain patients: A trial in the framework of a non-manipulative osteopathic management

Cervical stiffness is a clinical feature commonly appraised during the functional examination of cervical spine. Measurements of cervical stiffness in axial rotation have not been reported for patients with neck pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate cervical spine stiffness in axial rotation among neck pain patients and asymptomatic subjects, and to analyze the impact of osteopathic management … ABSTRACT

Developing a new approach to persistent pain management in osteopathic practice. Stage 1: A feasibility study for a group course

Persistent pain is a complex biopsychosocial problem which can be challenging to manage in clinical practice. This paper reports the first in a series of studies exploring ways to enhance care for patients with persistent pain using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In this study, six week ‘Living Well with Persistent Pain’ groups were co-facilitated by a clinical psychologist and an osteopath … ABSTRACT
