UK trained osteopaths’ relationship to evidence based practice – An analysis of influencing factors

Use of evidence based practice (EBP) remains controversial amongst UK osteopaths and developing an understanding of factors that influence EBP implementation is important for the profession. This study aimed to explore factors that influence the use of EBP amongst UK osteopaths and to compare these with other healthcare professionals … ABSTRACT

Is digital image correlation able to detect any mechanical effect of cranial osteopathic manipulation? – A preliminary study

Today there is still a controversy surrounding the existence of mobility between the bones of the skull, the foundation on which cranial osteopathy techniques are based. The lack of total closure for the sutures of young people or simply the suture discontinuity of the elderly would mean there is residual mobility or at least a weakness area. The goal of this work was to study skull deformation as an indicator of possible mobility or altered stiffness area under slow loading on either side of the sagittal suture using a digital-image-correlation based system … ABSTRACT

Concussion Evaluation and Management: An Osteopathic Perspective

Concussion Evaluation and Management: An Osteopathic Perspective

Concussions have been increasingly reported over the past decade, but the reported incidence likely minimizes the actual numbers of people affected. Associated symptoms include emotional, somatic, and cognitive complaints, which may be prolonged in patients with certain risk factors. Neurologic examination is necessary to exclude upper motor neuron lesions and thus the need for brain imaging. Cervical conditions are often found concurrently with head injury and displays a similar presentation to concussions. Therefore, determining symptom origin can be problematic. Neuropsychological, oculomotor, and balance evaluations expose specific deficits that can be successfully managed with rehabilitation. Osteopathic assessment of the cranium, spine, sacrum, and thorax for somatic dysfunctions allows for prudent interventions. Patients involved in sports may begin an established graduated return-to-play protocol once cleared by their physician. Concurrently, a parallel return-to-learn program, with applicable academic accommodations, is recommended … MORE

Osteopathic clinical reasoning: An ethnographic study of perceptual diagnostic judgments, and metacognition

Clinical reasoning has been widely researched in the health sciences; however, in osteopathy it is still in its relative infancy. The objective of this study was to explore the moment by moment clinical reasoning processes of an osteopath whilst with patients, to understand the role of perceptual diagnostic judgments, and metacognitive processes … ABSTRACT

A Mathematical Model for the Sounds Produced by Knuckle Cracking

A Mathematical Model for the Sounds Produced by Knuckle Cracking

The articular release of the metacarpophalangeal joint produces a typical cracking sound, resulting in what is commonly referred to as the cracking of knuckles. Despite over sixty years of research, the source of the knuckle cracking sound continues to be debated due to inconclusive experimental evidence as a result of limitations in the temporal resolution of non-invasive physiological imaging techniques. To support the available experimental data and shed light onto the source of the cracking sound, we have developed a mathematical model of the events leading to the generation of the sound. The model resolves the dynamics of a collapsing cavitation bubble in the synovial fluid inside a metacarpophalangeal joint during an articular release … MORE

Osteopathic manipulative therapy potentiates motor cortical plasticity

Osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMTh; manipulative care provided by foreign-trained osteopaths) is effective in managing pain caused by a variety of clinical conditions. Nevertheless, the physiologic mechanisms at the basis of the clinical improvement are poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of OMTh, muscle stretching, and soft touch interventions on motor cortical excitability through a rapid-rate paired associative stimulation (PAS) protocol … ABSTRACT

Osteopathic care for low back pain and neck pain: a cost-utility analysis

The aim of this study was to examine the health and economic consequences of osteopathic care for low back pain and neck pain in addition to usual care compared to usual care alone. For this purpose a decision tree model considering a one-year time horizon was applied. The analysis occurred from a health insurance perspective only considering direct medical costs. The health effects were expressed as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) … ABSTRACT

Experiences of pregnant women receiving osteopathic care

The state of women’s health during pregnancy and in the post-natal period can have profound and long-term effects on their own health and that of their children. Women are increasingly seeking complementary and alternative therapies during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of women who received osteopathic treatment during pregnancy … ABSTRACT
