Endocannabinoids release after Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. A brief review

Since 70’s, scientific research has analyzed how many acute and chronic issues can affect body systems. In case of depression, chronic pain and overtraining, centrals and peripherals systems act to manage and maintain body adaptations. The aim of this study is to evaluate if the osteopathic treatment can increase the release of Cannabinoid receptor (CB) and promote the linkage with their receptors … ABSTRACT

Efficacy of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment on Postural Control in Parkinsonian Patients With Pisa Syndrome: A Pilot Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial

Pisa syndrome (PS) is a clinical condition frequently associated with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). It is characterized by a trunk lateral flexion higher than 10 degrees and reversible when lying. One pathophysiological hypothesis is the altered verticality perception, due to a somatosensory impairment. Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) manages fascial-system alterations, linked to somatic dysfunctions. Fascial system showed to be implicated in proprioceptive sensibility. The aim of the study was to assess OMT efficacy on postural control in PD-PS patients by stabilometry … ABSTRACT

Self-management behaviour and knowledge of patients with musculoskeletal complaints attending an Australian osteopathy clinic: A consecutive sampling design

Musculoskeletal complaints present a substantial disease burden worldwide and account for nearly 8% of the total disease burden in Australia. Like other chronic diseases, self-management plays a significant role in the overall management plan for musculoskeletal complaints. The objective of this study was to evaluate the self-management behaviours of patients seeking care for a primary musculoskeletal complaint in an Australian osteopathy clinic … ABSTRACT

Weekly Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment to Improve Measures of Sympathetic Tone in Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common hormone disorder affecting reproductive and metabolic health of reproductive-age women, was shown in a previous study from these authors to be associated with increased sympathetic tone. Increased sympathetic tone contributes to long-term health risks for cardiovascular disease and promotes PCOS pathogenesis. The objective of this study was to determine whether weekly osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) improves physiologic measures of sympathetic tone in women with PCOS … ABSTRACT

Buying Time: Using OMM to Potentially Reduce the Demand for Mechanical Ventilation in Patients With COVID-19

Buying Time: Using OMM to Potentially Reduce the Demand for Mechanical Ventilation in Patients With COVID-19

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic is causing an increased need for mechanical ventilation for a significant percentage of people who present to the hospital for treatment. This increase in demand could surpass the supply of ventilators and lead to an increase in mortality due to a lack of ventilator vacancies. There is significant evidence that osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) can alleviate pulmonary symptoms and aid in quicker recoveries from various respiratory ailments. OMM has the potential to play a significant role in helping reduce a patient’s need for mechanical ventilation by delaying the onset of acute respiratory distress syndrome stemming from SARS-Cov2 infections … MORE

Osteopathic treatment leads to significantly greater reductions in chronic thoracic pain after CABG surgery: A randomised controlled trial

There are a number of long-term postoperative complications after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Pulmonary function is decreased by 12% and 30%–50% of the patients have chronic thoracic pain. This randomised controlled trial with two parallel groups aimed to explore the effectiveness of osteopathic treatments (OTs) on these conditions. The standard care (SC) group and the and OT group received a 12-week standard cardiac rehabilitation programme, which was supplemented with four OTs for the OT group only. The outcome assessors were blinded to the patients’ allocation … MORE

In vitro mimicking of therapeutic soft tissue stimulation regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines

In vitro mimicking of therapeutic soft tissue stimulation regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines

Objective Soft tissue manual therapies such as massage and myofascial release are commonly utilized by osteopathic physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists. These techniques are predicated on subjecting tissues to biophysical mechanical stimulation but the cellular and molecular mechanism(s) mediating these effects are poorly understood. A series of studies established an in vitro model system for mimicking therapeutic soft tissue stimulation of dermal fibroblasts and established that injury-like strain induces the secretion of numerous pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, mechanical strain replicating soft tissue manual therapy reduces strain-induced secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Here, we sought to partially confirm and extend these reports and provide independent corroboration of prior results … MORE
