Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) use among osteopathic physicians in the United States

Updated data on the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments (OMT) by osteopathic physicians in the United States is overdue. This data would provide an up-to-date point of reference for evaluating the current use of OMT as a distinguishing feature of the osteopathic profession. The objective of this survey was to determine the prevalence of OMT use, barriers to its use, and factors that correlate with increased use … MORE

A blame game and sticky labels: A qualitative study of osteopaths’ experiences of managing patients with pain catastrophising

There is growing interest in how catastrophising negatively impacts patient outcomes, but little research on how osteopaths perceive and manage catastrophising within the realities of clinical practice. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore osteopaths’ understanding and attitudes towards the construct of catastrophising in patients and the strategies they employ to manage it … ABSTRACT

Effects of spinal manipulative therapy on inflammatory mediators in patients with non-specific low back pain: a non-randomized controlled clinical trial

The inflammatory profiles of patients with acute and chronic nonspecific low back pain (LBP) patients are distinct. Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) has been shown to modulate the production of nociceptive chemokines differently in these patient cohorts. The present study further investigates the effect(s) of SMT on other inflammatory mediators in the same LBP patient cohorts … MORE

Osteopathic Manual Treatment for Pain Severity, Functional Improvement, and Return to Work in Patients With Chronic Pain

Osteopathic Manual Treatment for Pain Severity, Functional Improvement, and Return to Work in Patients With Chronic Pain

Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is associated with disability, poor quality of life (QOL), and failure to return to work (RTW). Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) or osteopathic manual therapy (OMTh) are increasingly offered to patients with CNCP; however, the existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the literature that explore the effectiveness of OMTh have major limitations. The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the quality of evidence documenting the effectiveness of OMTh for patients with CNCP using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, and to evaluate the efficacy of OMTh in patients with CNCP through a meta-analysis of pooled data from previous studies … ABSTRACT

Characteristics and Management of Pregnant Patients From a Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Clinic

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is considered beneficial in the treatment of pregnant women, but few studies have outlined the presenting complaints and diagnoses that warrant consideration and utilization of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in this population. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of pregnant patients receiving OMM at a neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM)/OMM specialty outpatient clinic, for the purpose of identifying patients who would benefit from referral to NMM specialty clinics or to be considered for treatment by DOs in non-NMM specialty clinics … ABSTRACT

Clinical application of visceral thoracic osteopathic manipulations in heart rate variability measurement with photoplethysmography for stress-related symptoms: a case report

Clinical application of visceral thoracic osteopathic manipulations in heart rate variability measurement with photoplethysmography for stress-related symptoms: a case report

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the change in frequency from one heartbeat to the next, due to the adaptation of the heart’s rhythm in response to an internal or external stimulus. Increased HRV has been reported as a potential indicator of general health. The relationship between structure and function is one of the guiding principles of osteopathy; it considers anatomy essential for explaining physiological dysfunction. There is a paucity of research on the effects of Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) on the effects of HRV. We hypothesize that OMM can be used safely and to help promote healthier HRV. We herein report on a case of improved HRV after serial OMM sessions .. MORE

Treating Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Using Counterstrain: A Novel Approach

Treating Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Using Counterstrain: A Novel Approach

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a challenging disease to treat and requires a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach. We discuss the use of a novel approach to counterstrain using irritants – as identified by the patient – to induce symptoms of neuropathy and paresthesia and treat these symptoms as if they were counterstrain tender points. This treatment approach to CRPS has not previously been described in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) literature, including Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine … MORE

An Osteopathic Modular Approach to Asthma: A Narrative Review

Asthma is among of the first ailments documented in the existing academic literature as being successfully managed with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) techniques. Time-efficient and well-tolerated OMT techniques have been gradually added to the literature to manage this increasingly prevalent disease. In this narrative review, the authors discuss previously-published literature describing the history, diagnosis, and management of asthma related to osteopathic principles and practices and OMT application. They also present current and newly-approved medical managements, including biologics and inhaled corticosteroids. This article also includes supplemental videos showcasing OMT techniques for asthma management, which were developed by the authors based on recommendations indicated in the literature … ABSTRACT
