WEBINAR: Neuroscience and touch: an osteopathic perspective

Lecturer: Francesco Cerritelli PhD, MPH, DO, MS

Platform: GoToWebinar

Date: 10 April 2018, h18:00
Language
: English
Duration: 60 minutes

Topic:
The webinar will introduce the new COME to SCIENCE events of COME Collaboration. Those are short web seminars that will present the newest scientific evidence, critically assessed and discussed by the leaders in the field.
As core part of the webinar, this COME to SCIENCE event will focus on the new recent neuroscience evidence of how attention can modulate the touch and how it can influence the brain networks on those who are touched.

Webinar: The Touch That Matters Most

Lecturer: Francis McGlone, PhD (CV)

Platform: GoToWebinar

Date: 11 May 2018, h 6:00 pm (Central European Time)
Language
: English
Duration: 60 minutes

Topic:

In this talk I will pose the question 'why do we have a system of slowly conducting gentle touch responsive nerves in the skin?' and provide some evidence-based, and some speculative, reasons why such a system has evolved in social species. Here we propose, and provide evidence, that a recently identified system of gentle touch sensitive nerves in the skin provide the neurobiological substrate for a 2nd touch system that encodes the emotional qualities of skin touch. These nerves – called c-tactile afferents (CT) - are hypothesised to play a fundamental and critical role in socialising the developing brain, and have led to our view of the skin as a social organ where gentle nurturing touch shapes the destiny of the social brain.

Webinar: Chronic pain and allostatic load: a touch-based biopsychosocial informed model of osteopathic care

Lecturer: Jorge Esteves, PhD, MA, BSc, DO (CV)

Platform: GoToWebinar

Date:  22 June 2018, h 6:00 pm (Central European Time)
Language
: English
Duration: 60 minutes

Objectives:

1. Critically discuss the links between chronic pain, uncertainty, stress and allostatic load
2. Critically evaluate the role of hands-on osteopathic examination and techniques in a biopsychosocial framework
3. Appraise the role of an evidence informed biopsychosocial osteopathic approach in the care of persistent pain sufferers
